Reid Announces Over $600,000 For Henderson Police Department

Press Release

Date: Sept. 30, 2014
Location: Washington, DC

Nevada Senator Harry Reid announced today a $610,000 grant for Henderson Police Department from the Department of Justice through the Smart Policing Initiative. The Henderson Police Department (HPD), will use the grant funds to develop an investigative lead generation tool to assist with identifying and prosecuting criminals who use e-trade to sell stolen property. The data-mining tool will assist with the identification of stolen goods posted on the Web so HPD can return stolen property to its original owner within the City of Henderson. Utilizing this tool will improve the efficiency of identifying stolen goods on websites. The HPD will collaborate with other local jurisdictions and federal government organizations in southern Nevada.

"In today's 21st century world where cybercrime is increasingly prevalent, our police departments need all the resources available to them to fight this new kind of crime," said Reid. "I am glad the Department of Justice has provided the Henderson Police Department with these important funds. With this money, HPD will be able to protect the residents of Henderson and be prepared to fight the diverse kinds of crime they may encounter."

About The Smart Policing Initiative

The Smart Policing Initiative seeks to build upon the concepts of offender-based and place-based policing and broaden the knowledge of effective policing strategies. The most convincing research demonstrates that place-based or hotspot policing reduces violent crime and neighborhood disorder. This initiative addresses the need for effective policing that requires a tightly focused, collaborative approach that is measurable, based on sound, detailed analysis and includes policies and procedures for accountability. This grant program seeks to build upon data-driven, evidence-based policing by encouraging state and local law enforcement agencies to develop effective, economical, and innovative responses to precipitous or extraordinary increases in crime, or in a type or types of crime within their jurisdictions.
