Udall Statement on Tonight's Jefferson County School Board Meeting

Press Release

Date: Oct. 2, 2014
Location: Jefferson County, DC
Issues: K-12 Education

Mark Udall issued the following statement on tonight's meeting of the Jefferson County school board:

"It is my hope that the school board will listen to the parents, students, and teachers who are making their voices heard tonight and going forward."

"It's inspiring to witness young Coloradans take an interest in their education and speak-up for their beliefs. Colorado parents expect their kids to receive a world-class education that teaches students facts and diverse perspectives. In my view, censoring our history books is wrong and falls short of our obligation to prepare our children to be engaged and proud citizens."

As the Associated Press reported earlier this week, Congressman Gardner has refused to break his silence on an issue affecting a large part of the constituency he is running to represent: whether the Jefferson County school board has the authority to rewrite the school curriculum to reflect their political views.

The school board's proposal echoes a Republican National Committee resolution passed earlier this year "calling for a fight against the College Board's new framework for Advanced Placement U.S. History."
