Huron County's Laker Schools to Receive $1.83 Million Grant from Department of Education

Press Release

Date: Sept. 25, 2014
Location: Washington, DC

Today, U.S. Representative Candice Miller (MI-10) applauded the U.S. Department of Education's announcement that, as part of its School Climate Transformation Grant Program, it will be awarding the Elkton-Pigeon-Bay Port School District (known as the Laker Schools) a grant totaling $1.83 million over five years that will be dedicated to hiring mental health experts at its elementary school.

"This grant, one of only three awarded in Michigan, will undoubtedly go a long way to help Laker Elementary enhance the mental health services they provide their students," Miller stated. "Statistics show that recognizing and responding to early signs of mental illness significantly increase the success rates of treatment."

"This will allow us to build an even more positive school climate, a safer school environment and put more professional feet on the ground to meet the needs of our kids," said Laker Elementary School Principal and grant applicant Kathy Dickens.

The School Climate Transformation Grant Program, administered by the U.S. Department of Education, is intended to provide school districts with funds to be used to develop, enhance, or expand systems of support for implementing evidence-based, multi-tiered behavioral frameworks for improving behavioral outcomes and learning conditions for students.
