Issue Position: Spending Cuts and Debt

Issue Position

Dr. Dan spent nearly 30 years practicing medicine and treating patients in Northern Michigan. However, after years of listening to and watching Washington politicians mortgaging his children and grandchildren's future, he had enough and sought elected office for the first time ever. With a federal debt over $17 trillion, Congress cannot ignore this problem. Dr. Dan believes it is imperative that we reduce federal spending and begin erasing the staggering national debt that is facing the nation.

"It is unsustainable for Washington to borrow 40 cents of every dollar it spends. This fiscal policy is the primary factor currently weighing down the economy. The President must stop asking for the American taxpayers to support trillion dollar deficits and we must set realistic spending priorities to ensure the prosperity of America's children." -- Dr. Dan Benishek

Dr. Dan fears this unsustainable level of debt could seriously threaten economic recovery, affect seniors and low-income Americans the hardest, and leave all Americans with a diminished future. This is why Dr. Dan has supported measures to reduce federal spending, erase the annual deficits, and provide a balanced budget amendment to the U.S. Constitution. Since being elected to Congress in 2010, the annual deficit has decreased every year, but Dr. Dan knows more needs to be done.

Dr. Dan believes if we make the needed decisions today, we can improve this country's economy, provide more certainty to our job providers, protect our seniors and those in need, and build a stronger country for our children and grandchildren.
