Rep. Mike Honda announced today that he has received the endorsement of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, one of the nation's leading organizations for gun safety and reform, and its network of 25 California Chapters for his re-election to represent California's 17th Congressional District.

Daniel Gross, President of the Brady Campaign, said, "Mike Honda is a true leader in the U.S. House of Representatives working to reduce gun violence in our country. His long history of action on this issue goes back to his time in the California Assembly where he supported legislation to keep guns out of the hands of dangerous people. Rep. Honda was also an early supporter in Congress for expanding background checks to include online and gun show sales. The Brady Campaign is proud to work with Congressman Honda and to support his campaign for reelection."

Congressman Honda's work in this area includes fighting against the Tiahrt Amendments, which greatly restrict the Bureau of Alcohol, Tobacco, Firearms and Explosives' power to oversee gun sales, for full funding of the National Instant Criminal Background Check System, and for closure of the gun show and mail order loopholes that allow the purchase of firearms with no background check and essentially no paperwork or oversight.

"As a former high school teacher, my heart breaks at each instance of unnecessary gun violence in our country. I'm honored to have the endorsement of the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence, and I will continue to do everything I can to prevent needless violence in our country," said Rep. Honda.

Most recently, Rep. Honda served as the successful co-chair for Measure C, to add commonsense regulations including prohibiting large-capacity magazines, in the City of Sunnyvale. He also just introduced a bill, H.R. 5344 the Responsible Body Armor Possession Act of 2014, last month to ban civilians from using military-grade body armor.

The endorsement of the Brady Campaign and its network of 25 California Chapters follows the endorsement last week of the Berryessa -- North San Jose Democratic Club. Rep. Honda also has the endorsements of President Barack Obama, the California Democratic Party, and over 100 local and statewide elected leaders, including Attorney General Kamala Harris. Despite being outspent 3:1 by his opponent, Rep. Honda won the June primary election by 20 points.
