Issues: Veterans

Brig. Gen. (retired) John Bubar and Brig. Gen. (retired) Don McCormack, a Republican and former LePage appointee, today announced their support for U.S. Rep. Mike Michaud in the race for governor.

"Without a doubt, Mike Michaud is the best person to lead our state," McCormack said. "Maine needs a leader who is ready for the unexpected challenges that every governor will face. Having seen Mike and Gov. LePage in action, it's clear that only Mike Michaud has the temperament, the vision and the character to lead Maine and move this state forward."

Michaud is forming a coalition of veterans and military families to advise him on state-level veterans issues and elevate awareness about the biggest challenges facing Maine's veterans. McCormack will serve as chair.

McCormack, Bubar and other veterans have been working with the campaign to identify ways to improve support for veterans, including examining initiatives that have worked in other states.

"Maine is missing opportunities to help our veterans and service members," McCormack said.

"From homelessness to jobs to the alarming rate of suicide, the issues facing Maine's veterans are great. I am eager to get to work with Gen. McCormack and Gen. Bubar to ensure veterans and military families throughout the state not only have their voices heard but also have a role in policy initiatives that will improve their lives and address the most pressing issues facing veterans today," Michaud said. "Bubar and McCormack bring with them more than 67 years of military service in the Air Force and the Maine Air National Guard. Their experience is invaluable. I'm humbled to have their support."

McCormack and Bubar both served as assistant adjutants general for Air for the Maine National Guard. McCormack also served as chief of staff for the Maine National Guard Joint Staff for more than seven years. After retiring from the military, he was appointed by Gov. LePage to serve as a bureau director in the Department of Administrative and Financial Services. Bubar served as the wing commander at the 101st Air Refueling Wing in Bangor and was course director for the Air National Guard's Commander Development Course in Washington, D.C.

"I've seen Mike work with Maine veterans of all ranks and services. He has a respect, an empathy, and a commitment to veterans that cannot be questioned," Bubar said. "Years of war have resulted in more combat veterans in Maine than we have had in decades. The challenges facing them are great. Maine needs an executive in the Blaine House who understands veterans and has a deep understanding of veterans' affairs. That executive is Mike Michaud."
