Duckworth Diary - September 5th, 2014

Statement

Dear Neighbors,

I spent this week in Illinois as the August Work Period comes to a close.

This week we celebrated Labor Day, a day we honor all the hardworking Americans that keep our economy moving.

On Tuesday, I hosted a drug trends roundtable at the Kenneth Young Center in Elk Grove Village. We brought in experts from Kids Matter, Linking Efforts Against Drugs, and local police departments, among other organizations to discuss prevention, addiction, and treatment of drug abuse in our communities, especially among our high school population. Drug abuse is no longer just an inner city problem, but it is something we also deal with in the suburbs at frightening rates.

I also met with the Metropolitan Chicago Healthcare Council (MCHC) and their member hospitals to discuss their newest report on the economic impact of hospitals within the 8th District. Health care providers, especially hospitals, play a critical role in serving the health needs of our communities. You can read this report here.

In Elgin, I attended a roundtable with local and state elected officials and the Elgin Area Convention Visitors Bureau to discuss tourism efforts in the region and how we can continue to make our region a top Illinois destination. I also took a tour of the Grand Victoria Casino to learn more about their business.

This morning, I spoke at the Teamsters Women's Conference. Hardworking Americans from all over the country came to the Chicagoland area to learn about the work they do. It was a pleasure meeting with them.

I hope you are having a great week.

Sincerely,

Congresswoman Duckworth
