Bishop's New Political Ad Attempts to Scare Voters with Lies

Press Release

Date: Aug. 26, 2014
Issues: Taxes

Senator Lee Zeldin, Republican and Conservative Party candidate for Congress in New York's First Congressional District, today criticized his opponent, incumbent Congressman Tim Bishop, for trying to scare voters with lies in his false and misleading "Zeldin's Plan" TV advertisement.

Congressman Bishop's expensive new political commercial attempts to deceive voters by saying that under the "Zeldin Plan," the nation's wealthiest 1% would pay $100,000 less in taxes and the tax burden on the middle class would then go up, citing a CTJ study.

The cited CTJ study compares the Bush tax cut plan to extend all tax cuts, to the Obama tax cut plan, to extend some, but not most tax cuts.
In addition to his clever accounting ruse, Bishop lies about the facts. Senator Zeldin supports reducing the tax burden on the middle class, not increasing it. His record proves it:

- Reduced middle income tax rates to lowest level in 60 years;
- Repealed MTA Payroll Tax for 80 percent of employers;
- Sponsored the nation's strongest property tax cap;
- Eliminated the Salt Water Fishing License Fee

Six years ago, in 2008, Senator Zeldin stated that he supported extending the Bush Tax Cuts for everyone, not just the nation's wealthiest 1%. It's incredibly deceitful to use this CTJ study that compares the Bush tax cut plan to the Obama tax cut plan that didn't even exist in 2008.

These are the same Bush tax cuts that Bishop himself voted to extend two years later, in 2010, which were passed by Congress and signed by President Obama. Upon signing the extension of the Bush tax cuts, President Obama called it "a substantial victory for middle-class families across the country."

"Congressman Bishop's new political commercial is a desperate attempt to scare voters with lies," said Senator Zeldin. "I have been a rock solid proponent of reducing the tax burden on all Long Islanders, especially the middle class. Meanwhile, Tim Bishop has raised taxes on everyone, but shamefully wants to campaign on anything other than his own voting record."

Senator Zeldin concluded, "Over 12 years in office, Tim Bishop's high paid political consultants have advised him to lie about my record and run from his own. It's time to term limit Tim. We need someone in Washington who walks the walk, and doesn't just say whatever he needs to say to get re-elected to Congress every two years. We cannot change Washington unless we change the people we send there to represent us."
