U.S. Senator Pat Toomey (R-Pa.) is honoring the 100th anniversary of the Veterans of Foreign Wars (VFW) and is commending its members for their courage and sacrifice in service to the United States and their steadfast support of and dedication to all veterans.

Sen. Toomey is sponsoring a resolution encouraging all Americans to express their appreciation to veterans and to the VFW for all the work it does for veterans.

"Our veterans deserve our unwavering support and appreciation for their courage and sacrifice in service to our country," said Sen. Toomey. "I am grateful to the VFW for its century of support for our soldiers, sailors, airmen, Marines, and Coast Guard members. The VFW helps veterans and their families across the country and right here in Pennsylvania. I hope all Americans will join me in expressing appreciation for all the VFW has done and continues to do."

Pennsylvania VFW State Commander Gary R. Smith said, "We appreciate the support and recognition of federal lawmakers, including Sen. Pat Toomey, for the many past success stories that the VFW has created for veterans and for our efforts to serve, support and assist veterans and today's troops."

Background:

The VFW was officially organized in September of 1914 at the former Schenley Hotel (now the William Pitt Union) in Pittsburgh, Pa. when the American Veterans of Foreign Service and the National Society of the Army of the Philippines voted to merge their organizations.
