Emily Cain Marks Anniversary of Social Security Act, Pledges to Protect Social Security for Future Generations

Press Release

On the 79th anniversary of the signing of the Social Security Act, Emily Cain, Democratic candidate for Maine's second Congressional district, reaffirmed her commitment to protect and preserve Social Security.

"Social Security represents our society's belief that if you work hard and play by the rules, you deserve a secure retirement," said Cain. "It's been there for countless Americans for nearly 80 years and I am committed to ensuring Social Security will be there for the next 80 years."
Cain is opposed to privatizing Social Security or cutting benefits for retirees and has a strong record of standing up for Maine's seniors. As a state legislator, she worked to prevent cuts to programs that help seniors, including the Drugs for the Elderly program, the Medicare Savings Program, and Meals on Wheels.

"No one who spends their lives working for a living, serving their country, giving back to their community, or raising the next generation should have to live in poverty when they are older," added Cain.

The Social Security Act was signed into law by President Franklin D. Roosevelt on August 14, 1935.
