U.S. House Homeland Security Committee Chairman Michael McCaul (R-Texas) released the following statement regarding the resignation of Iraqi Prime Minister Nouri al-Maliki.

Chairman McCaul: "The whole world is put at risk when America does not use its military strength and political leadership to combat terrorists who seek a safe haven from which to plot attacks against our allies and the homeland. I am encouraged that Prime Minister Maliki has agreed to step aside in order to pave the way for a new Iraqi government, however, this is only the first of many steps that are needed for true political reconciliation. Democracy takes time and if we wait for Baghdad to forge a political solution to this crisis, as President Obama wants, we will find ourselves in a very dangerous situation. While we must continue to encourage the process of reconciliation, we cannot afford to act indecisively in Iraq."
