Durbin Ducking Debates

Press Release

Date: Aug. 13, 2014
Location: Springfield, IL

Career politician Dick Durbin is ignoring debate negotiations with opponent Jim Oberweis, further cementing his reputation as an arrogant, out-of-touch Washington insider.

Durbin has said publicly on several occasions he will debate Oberweis. However, since then, Oberweis' letter last month to Durbin and his campaign manager has been ignored. The letter asked Durbin and his team to meet to cement a debate schedule.

"Dick Durbin has been in Washington 32 years and he's playing Washington games with the debates," said Oberweis. "I know he's busy traveling the state, proposing more spending, taxes and regulations, but he should have time to debate his opponent for this important office."

Oberweis has proposed:

Seven major statewide debates with major media sponsors.

At least one debate hosted by a liberal organization and one hosted by a conservative organization.

At least three of the debates outside the Chicago media market in downstate Illinois.

Open, free-wheeling formats to allow the best interchanges on the issues.

Oberweis said he has received lots of interest from media outlets to host debates but the outlets were waiting for Durbin to announce his debate intentions before locking down plans.
