U.S. Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-FL), Chairman of the Middle East and North Africa Subcommittee, made the following statement on the appointment of Professor William Schabas and other Israel critics to lead a UN Human Rights Council (UNHRC) investigation into the current situation in Gaza. The inquiry is a result of the one-sided resolution passed by that body last month in which the United States was the lone dissenting vote, and which failed to mention the use of human shields by Hamas and its indiscriminate rocket attacks against Israeli civilian populations. Statement by Ros-Lehtinen:
"It's repulsive that the UN Human Rights Council has appointed Schabas to head this investigation. There isn't even a pretense of the desire for a fair and balanced judgment by the UNHRC; the verdict has already been decided before the panel will even convene its first meeting. Schabas has repeatedly called for Israeli Prime Minister Benjamin Netanyahu to be prosecuted for war crimes and is a well-known critic of Israel. Worse, he has failed to denounce Hamas for what it is: a terrorist organization that uses innocent Palestinians as human shields against Israeli strikes, despite Hamas being labeled by the U.S., EU and others as such. The appointment of such an unhinged and one-sided critic of Israel ensures that this so-called inquiry will amount to nothing more than a kangaroo court and another exercise in anti-Israel bashing by the corrupt United Nations."
