Rep. Engel Says James Brady Turned Personal Tragedy into a Call to Action

Statement

Issues: Guns

Congressman Eliot Engel (NY-16) issued the following statement on the passing of James Brady:

"I am deeply saddened to learn that James Brady has passed away. Jim was a tireless advocate for sensible gun control solutions who turned a personal tragedy into a national call to action. He was a driving force behind the Brady Handgun Violence Prevention Act -- which established federal background checks for gun buyers -- and launched the Brady Campaign to Prevent Gun Violence with his wife Sarah. I am proud to have earned their support.

"I urge Congress to continue Jim's legacy by taking up legislation to further expand background checks, and by passing the

Protect Law Enforcement Armor Act to ban the sale of handguns that use armor-piercing ammunition. Gun violence has ripped far too many families and communities apart. We must take immediate steps to address this growing epidemic before more lives are claimed."
