Press Release

Date: Aug. 5, 2014
Location: Memphis, TN

Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09) will celebrate the second annual "Start-Up Day Across America" by joining 10 nascent small businesses from the Memphis area at StartCo. As he tours the StartCo facility and meets with representatives from several of the startup businesses that work out of the facility, Congressman Cohen will raise awareness of the significant impact that entrepreneurs can have on both the Memphis and national economies as well as highlight the innovation taking place in the Ninth District.

"Startups and minority-owned small businesses are the heart of our economy and can be a catalyst for the creation of good-paying jobs in Memphis," said Congressman Cohen. "The new small businesses being built at StartCo can play an important role in our city's economic recovery, and everyone should know of the work they are doing."

Since 2008, American startups have helped create an average of 2 million jobs each year. At a time when many large corporations are still hedging their hiring practices, startups are hiring at an unprecedented rate. According to a 2013 Kauffman Foundation report, startups -- particularly companies younger than 3 years old -- are responsible for the majority of the net new jobs in the United States.
