Press Release

Date: Aug. 5, 2014
Location: Parkersburg, WV

West Virginia veterans gathered in Parkersburg today to launch the Veterans for Capito coalition in support of Shelley Moore Capito for U.S. Senate.

"My father served in World War II and I grew up understanding the depths of the sacrifices made by those who serve our country," said Shelley Moore Capito. "We have a duty to support our veterans as they have protected us. We must equip them with the care and resources they need to thrive. Serving our veterans has always been a top priority of mine and I will continue to work tirelessly for our veterans in the Senate."

Shelley Moore Capito has a proven record of working for West Virginia veterans, including championing legislation to ensure veterans receive the care and support they deserve. Highlights include:

Veterans Access to Care through Choice, Accountability, and Transparency Act which passed both the House and Senate last week. This bill will:

Make sure that veterans receive the quality health care that they deserve by providing $5 billion to increase the hiring of medical providers at VA hospitals and by allowing veterans who cannot receive prompt treatment at VA facilities to access care through non-VA doctors

Upgrade the GI Bill by allowing veterans to receive in-state tuition at colleges and universities around the country and expanding a scholarship program for the children of soldiers killed in action to include spouses as well.

Improve accountability at the VA following the recent scandal surrounding misconduct at VA facilities around the country by making it easier to remove senior officials for misconduct.

Hire More Heroes Act makes it easier for small businesses to hire Veterans by giving them an exemption to ObamaCare's employer mandate.

Veterans Economic Opportunity Act improves programs that ensure our nation's veterans have the needed resources to find a job.

What West Virginia veterans are saying:

"Shelley Moore Capito fights for veterans just as we fought for this great country. She has always gone above and beyond to ensure West Virginia veterans are taken care of. She was a leader in holding the VA accountable after its shameful misconduct was discovered and she was instrumental in passing a bill to ensure this mistreatment doesn't happen again. Shelley is the kind of leader we need looking out for us in the Senate." -Ralph Blair, Belleville

"As the daughter of a World War II veteran, Shelley has always been on our side. She fought for more educational opportunities and support for soldiers transitioning into careers in the civilian workforce, and she demands accountability from the VA. Veterans who need help always find it with Shelley. West Virginia veterans want someone we can trust in the Senate, and Shelley has the record to prove she's that person."- Charles A. Harrington, Vietnam Vet, Morgantown

"Shelley Moore Capito has worked tirelessly to protect veterans. She firmly believes the men and women of the armed forces who have served our country deserve the very best. Her work to ensure veterans get the care we need shows me she will be a strong advocate for us in the Senate." - First Lieutenant Lawrence Lyon (US Army Infantry, Ret.), Korean War Veteran

Shelley Moore Capito wants all veterans to know she is very thankful to those who risked everything in service of our country. She is aware of their sacrifices and the contributions they have made to our country. Her office has helped many veterans with their claims, problems and questions. We can count on Shelley." -- Master Sergeant John Dills (US Army, Ret.), Vietnam Veteran
