Congresswoman Frederica S. Wilson (FL-24) issued the following statement on the escalation of violence in Israel:

"Israel has the right to defend herself and her people against Hamas' attacks. Israel made every effort to reach a cease-fire but Hamas rejected these efforts and has continued launching rockets targeted at Israeli civilians while shielding themselves within the Palestinian population. I condemn Hamas' actions and I am deeply saddened by the loss of life on both sides of the conflict.

"Reiterating the remarks made by Prime Minister Netanyahu this week, Israel uses its missiles to protect civilians, whereas Hamas uses citizens to protect its missiles.

"I hope that regional leaders will work together to seek a path forward toward peace. I commend President Obama and Secretary Kerry's work to end hostilities."
