"I strongly disagree with today's court ruling. Lawmakers and the courts must always ensure that justice is served for crime victims and their families. Today's ruling will only add to the emotional pain suffered by the loved ones of Ernest Dewayne Jones' victim, and other families who have suffered through the ordeal of these long, drawn out court cases.
The death penalty is not a sentence that is handed down lightly in California, as evidenced by this case where Mr. Jones was sentenced to the death penalty upon being convicted for raping and killing his girlfriend's mother. I stand with the overwhelming majority of Californians who support the death penalty as an appropriate sentence for those who commit the most heinous acts imaginable."
