Terry Introducing Legislation Demanding the Administration Account for Unaccompanied Alien Children

Statement

Date: July 15, 2014
Location: Washington, DC
Issues: Immigration

U.S. Representative Lee Terry (R-NE) made the following statement today on the current state of the U.S. southern border and announced his intentions to introduce legislation aimed at increasing transparency of the unaccompanied alien children (UAC) within our communities:

"My staff was made aware during a briefing with Department of Homeland Security (DHS) that there may be approximately 200 unaccompanied minors from Central America that have been placed in Nebraska, but DHS cannot account for their whereabouts. I believe that DHS should make this information available to the Congress, state officials and the public.

"I am introducing legislation that will direct the Attorney General in consultation with the Secretary of DHS to report to Congress and the American people on how many unaccompanied children have entered our country, where they're being sent, how many of them have been given immigration hearing dates, and how many of them are showing up for these hearings.

"The current situation on our southern border has been created by the President's unwillingness to enforce our immigration laws. If the President is going to ask me to vote to spend nearly $4 billion taxpayer dollars to fix a crisis he caused, he and his administration need to level with the American people and tell us if these children are being sent into our communities. I continue to believe that it's in the best interest of each child to be reunited with their parents."
