While women have made tremendous progress in the workplace, in politics, and across our culture, New York State still has too many laws left over from a time when women were not treated equally. Today, women in New York earn 84% of men's salaries. Mothers are less likely to be hired and promoted, and more likely to receive less salary for the same work as men. One study found that an average woman loses $434,000 over her career to the "motherhood penalty."

New York can do better. Last year, the New York State Legislature failed to pass a ten-point plan to empower women across New York State by combatting employment discrimination, strengthening laws against workplace sexual harassment, and guaranteeing women's reproductive rights. In Albany, I will push aggressively for this very important legislation.
