Gov. Minner Signs Contract To Begin Delaware Veterans Home Construction
Flanked by supportive legislators and appreciative veterans, Governor Ruth Ann Minner Tuesday signed a contract to begin construction of a home for veterans in Milford.
"When I sign this contract, we will be truly underway. In order to complete Delaware's veterans home by our target of December 2006, we must continue to show the same dedication that has gotten us to this point so quickly," Gov. Minner said.
Gov. Minner was the first governor to ever appropriate money for the long-sought veterans home and, last year, proposed an innovative process for the project under which design and construction could take place simultaneously. The "design-build" process will allow the home to be completed about a year sooner than had been expected.
The $29 million home on Airport Road in Milford will include 100,000 square feet and accommodate 150 veterans and 200 staff. Since Gov. Minner fast-tracked the project last year, a steering committee has met almost every week in order to keep to the ambitious time frame.
"I thank all of those who have been involved so far - including and especially our state's veterans - for their cooperation and perseverance," Gov. Minner said. "And, on behalf of the administration, I pledge that our commitment will continue as we see this very worthy project through to its completion."
The contractor for the veterans home construction includes the architectural firm of Bernardon Haber Holloway acting as the state's owner representative and the Design/Build team of Nason Construction/GBQC/Becker Morgan Group.
