Tom MacArthur remains silent six days after Aimee Belgard asked him to join her in rejecting a number of taxpayer funded congressional perks such as first class airfare and luxury vehicles.
"It's alarming that someone as wealthy as Tom MacArthur seems to expect the hard working men and women of Burlington and Ocean Counties to pay for his gym membership if he's elected, but that's just par for the course for him," said Hannah Ledford, Aimee Belgard's campaign manager. "He got rich by helping insurance companies shortchange the victims of hurricanes and wildfires -- no one should expect him to start standing up for the middle class now that he's running for Congress. Washington Republicans hand-picked MacArthur because they know if he's elected he'll be one more vote to benefit special interests at the expense of hard working middle-class families."
Last week, Aimee Belgard challenged MacArthur to reject a reasonable list of taxpayer funded congressional perks, including first class airfare, luxury vehicles, a members-only gym and campaign-style mailers to constituents. She also said that she would require members of Congress to disclose how the tax breaks they vote for would personally benefit them.
Tom MacArthur has also refused to respond to Belgard's challenge to start residing in the district full-time, and he has refused to disclose the size of his bonuses as the President and CEO of York Insurance.
