Today, Congressman Mike Michaud called on House Leadership to take urgent action to avoid a crisis in the Highway Trust Fund. This morning, the U.S. Department of Transportation announced that it will begin implementing cash management procedures next month that will limit the amount of highway funds available to the states.
"We are just weeks away from a slowdown in road construction projects across the country that will threaten thousands of American jobs. In the face of this monumental threat, House leadership has only proposed fixing one jobs crisis with another by eliminating Saturday mail delivery, said Michaud. "Once again I call on Speaker Boehner to stop the political games and work in a bipartisan manner to fix the Highway Trust Fund shortfall.
Last week, Michaud joined several of his Democratic colleagues in introducing H.R. 4679, the Stop Corporate Inversions Act of 2014, which would temporarily shore up the Highway Trust Fund by closing a tax loophole that allows U.S. corporations to evade taxes by reincorporating as foreign companies. The resulting tax revenue would be transferred to the Highway Trust Fund to address the immediate crisis and give congress time to negotiate a sustainable, long-term solution.
Last month, Representatives Michaud and Pingree sent a letter to Speaker Boehner expressing strong opposition to the elimination of Saturday mail delivery.
