Congressman Mike Michaud spoke about the importance of innovation and the need to nurture small businesses in Maine at the ribbon-cutting ceremony for IDEXX Laboratories' Synergy Center today. Michaud highlighted IDEXX's growth over the past 31 years, from its 1983 launch with five employees to its current stature as the state's largest company, employing well over 5,000 people.
"The IDEXX small business success story is an example of what every Maine entrepreneur can achieve," said Michaud. "IDEXX exemplifies the kind of entrepreneurial spirit that is so unique to Maine. Small business growth means more jobs, re-invigorated communities and ultimately the strengthening of our state's economic infrastructure. Congratulations to all of the IDEXX employees on today's exciting new chapter for the company, and I hope all of us across Maine can continue working together to ensure there are many more small businesses that are able to follow in IDEXX's footsteps."
The Synergy Center is LEED® certified, and will house up to 300 IDEXX employees. Nearly one-third of IDEXX's workforce is based in Maine. IDEXX has added more than 220 jobs since the Synergy Center opened late last year.
