Gov. Perry released the following statement today to commemorate the Independence Day holiday:
"238 years ago, American patriots united in their pursuit of freedom cast off the ties of empire and joined together in a declaration so powerful it is as valid and true today as it was on July 4, 1776. Weary of living under tyranny they put pen to paper, risking their lives on a gamble that they could wrest their freedom from the most powerful empire in the world.
"Today, we celebrate their courage and the vision they showed in laying down the moral foundation of what would become the greatest nation in history. I encourage everyone to have a safe and enjoyable holiday and to take a moment to honor the men and women of our armed forces who have fought and died to protect our freedom, and for those who still stand guard over us."
