"President Obama needs to take immediate action to prevent ISIL from creating a terrorist safe haven that stretches across a large parts of Syria and Iraq"
U.S. Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-FL), Chairman of the Middle East and North Africa Subcommittee, made the following statement regarding the ongoing deteriorating situation in Iraq, as al-Qaeda linked Islamic State in Iraq and the Levant continues its offensive across Iraq, leaving thousands dead in its wake. Statement by Ros-Lehtinen:
"The situation in Iraq is dire and only getting worse, and it threatens to completely unravel all of the gains we have made, yet President Obama continues to underestimate the severity of the situation and the risks ISIL poses to regional stability and U.S. national security.
"What we need in Iraq is targeted air and drone strikes that hit at the very heart of ISIL and stop them in their tracks while the Iraqis muster up a response -- and we need it posthaste. Foreign fighters continue to flock to the region, and now they travel freely and openly to and from Iraq. President Obama needs to take immediate action to prevent ISIL from creating a terrorist safe haven that stretches across large parts of Syria and Iraq, and he needs to develop a comprehensive plan that addresses the totality of the extremist threat and al-Qaeda's resurgence throughout the Middle East and North Africa."
