"What is clear is that the Castro tyranny continues to brutally oppress the Cuban people on a daily basis, and we must remain in solidarity with those fighting to regain their freedom"
U.S. Rep. Ileana Ros-Lehtinen (R-FL), Chairman of the Middle East and North Africa Subcommittee, made the following statement regarding a recently released 2014 FIU Cuba poll. Statement by Ros-Lehtinen:
"On the eve of increased brutal acts of repression across the island, including the jailing of Jorge Luis García Pérez "Antunez' and his wife Yris Pérez Aguilera, it's disappointing to see FIU release this misguided poll which will be seized by many to call for increased relations with the murderous Castro regime. Polls are misleading because the particular phrasing of questions can prompt just about any answer, and other polls on this topic indicate different opinions. But what is clear is that the Castro tyranny continues to brutally oppress the Cuban people on a daily basis, and we must remain in solidarity with those fighting to regain their freedom.
"Lifting sanctions on Havana's totalitarian regime will do nothing to advance the cause of freedom for Cubans, but with increased travel and the injection of more money into Castro's coffers, it will certainly enable the regime to continue oppressing those who thirst for basic human rights. Earlier this month, hundreds of Cuban pro-democracy leaders on the island signed a document testifying that the repression has increased dramatically, that business interests in Cuba would bolster the Castro regime to the detriment of those suffering on the island, and ask for the assistance and solidarity of the international community in their struggle for democracy. We must continue to stand in solidarity with those who suffer under Castro and remain clear that it is his dictatorial regime that must abandon its oppressive tactics."
