Congresswoman Lee Stands Up for the Voting Right Amendment Act

Today, Congresswoman Barbara Lee joined members of the Tri-Caucus and civil rights leaders in calling for Republican House leadership to bring the Voting Rights Amendment Act (VRAA) up for a vote. As the one year anniversary of the Supreme Court's decision to strike down voter protections in Shelby County v. Holder approaches, Congresswoman Lee joined her colleagues to reaffirm her commitment to ensuring all eligible voters have the means and opportunity to cast their votes.

"The fact is that the Supreme Court's decision in Shelby County v. Holder leaves the door wide open to voter discrimination," said Congresswoman Lee. "Having an effective, flexible Voting Rights Act that prevents discrimination and disenfranchisement is a worthy goal that members of both parties should be able to get behind. It's been nearly a year since the Supreme Court's misguided decision, and action is urgently needed."

"There is nothing more American than ensuring every eligible voter, no matter their race, age, or socio-economic background, can cast their ballot," Congresswoman Lee added. "I'm looking forward to working with the Republican leadership to restore this essential safeguard to our voting process."
