Nashville families already pay more for groceries due to record droughts. Tennesseans have been hit hard with rebuilding costs following more frequent weather catastrophes. And increased heat and continued air pollution could worsen the health and well-being of every Nashvillian -- especially children and the elderly.

The evidence is overwhelming. Climate change is happening, and there will be massive consequences and costs for Nashville and our state economy if we choose to do nothing.

Fortunately, this challenge, if we choose to accept it, is also an opportunity. By investing in an innovation agenda and partnering with clean energy business, we can create good-paying, green jobs in Tennessee, address the climate crisis, and build a clean-energy economy.

It's time for Nashville to lead. Here's where we can start:

--Invest in Tennessee businesses that can power our state and country with innovative technologies like wind turbines, solar panels, geothermal systems, hybrid and electric cars, and next-generation batteries.

--Support research and development for businesses and industries of the future--including clean-energy technologies, advanced manufacturing technologies, and more.

--Invest in research and experimentation tax credits for the private firms that are employing the innovative minds who are advancing critical energy research.

--Put Tennesseans to work making our homes and buildings energy efficient and recycling resources like bottles, plastic and aluminum to be used again.

--Protect our multi-billion dollar hunting and tourism industry by protecting our land and water and ending the disastrous practice of mountaintop removal.
