Legislation introduced by U.S. Representative Sean Duffy (WI-07) cleared a major hurdle this week. H.R. 4049, Ashland Breakwater Light Transfer Act, unanimously passed the House Natural Resources Committee clearing the way for full consideration on the Floor of the House of Representatives.

In 2012, the Coast Guard announced its intent to give-up ownership of the Lighthouse. H.R. 4049 will facilitate the transfer of responsibility for the iconic structure from the Coast Guard to the National Park Service preserving it for public education and access.

In his remarks to the committee, Rep. Duffy reiterated the importance of the lighthouse and urged consideration of the bill, "I am grateful to the committee for their strong support of my legislation. Next year will mark the 100th Anniversary of the Ashland Breakwater Light, a lighthouse that has stood strong on Lake Superior's shores, guiding ships through dark nights and storms and welcoming travelers back home.

"I have worked closely with National Park Service staff, as well as the local recreational community, to strike a balance that allows for the transfer of the lighthouse itself while preventing additional Washington rules and regulations from affecting any recreation on the waters surrounding the Ashland Light."

While the National Parks Service would take over the preservation and day to day operations of the lighthouse, the Coast Guard will maintain access to the Ashland Light as an aid to navigation and the Army Corps of Engineers will still maintain the breakwater on which the light stands.
