A well-regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State, the right of the people to keep and bear Arms, shall not be infringed.
Second Amendment to the U.S. Constitution
The NRA and other gun-advocacy groups claim to stand behind the Second Amendment. But the modifiers at the beginning get short shrift in their publications and propaganda.
"A well-regulated Militia, being necessary to the security of a free State " refers to the National Guard, under the command of the governor of the state via the adjutant general. So the purpose for keeping and bearing arms is to be a member of the state militia. The National Guard.
Given this, I have no problem with current, active members of the National Guard owning arms that they use to fulfill their duties. I also have no problem with hunters owning guns appropriate for the game found in their area. Especially if they eat what they shoot. I love a good bowl of venison chili.
But exempting the National Guard and hunting for food, it's time for reasonable gun control measures.
