Three Days Longer and Taxpayers Suffer

Press Release

Date: April 28, 2014
Location: Murphysborough, IL
Issues: Taxes

Today marks the day Illinoisans have finally earned enough money to pay off their total tax obligation at the federal, state and local levels. Tax Freedom Day comes three days later for Illinoisans than it did in 2013.

"It takes 118 days for an Illinois taxpayer to pay off their tax bill," said Mike Bost, State Representative and Republican candidate for U.S. Congress (IL-12). "Whether it is Congressman Bill Enyart's support of the increased tax burden on many middle class families with his unwavering support of Obamacare or Governor Pat Quinn's push to make the temporary income tax increase permanent, the results are the same: Hardworking taxpayers are left covering the bill they cannot afford."

Illinois' economic outlook remains bleak with latest monthly unemployment figures at 8.4% compared to neighboring states Ohio at 6.1%, Indiana and Wisconsin at 5.9%. The Wall Street Journal recently ran the headline, "What's the Matter with Illinois?" -- questioning Illinois' continued push to raise taxes.

"What's the matter with Illinois is failed leadership out of Washington and Springfield," added Bost. "Families across the district are not only struggling with lost jobs, homes and savings, but also from failed leadership coming out of Washington and Springfield. That's exactly what's the matter with Illinois."
