Issue Position: Creating a 21st Century Transportation Network

Issue Position

As our nation has aged, so have the roads, bridges, and key infrastructure that serve as the backbone for our transportation infrastructure. In 2012, the State Highway Administration identified nearly 100 structurally deficient bridges, including as many as 10 in Prince George's County alone.

However, now that the economy is beginning to recover it is time to invest in a 21st century transportation network that includes the Purple Line, strategic road enhancements, and investments in our bus system. That is why I supported The Transportation Infrastructure Investment Act of 2013 that will provide the necessary funding to improve this vital aspect of our economy.

The Transportation Infrastructure Investment Act of 2013 alone will help create more than 57,000 jobs in Maryland over the next five years. These are high-paying construction and engineering jobs that are needed to repair and expand our roads, mass transit, and infrastructure network.

Furthermore, projects like the Purple Line and a new south-bound interchange at the Greenbelt Metro Station will help attract new businesses and federal agencies like the FBI, grow our commercial tax base, create jobs, and support transit oriented development.
