Statement

Location: Washington, DC
Issues: Defense

Representative James Lankford (R-Okla.) issued the following statement after the announcement today that U.S. special forces had captured and taken into U.S. custody, Ahmed Abu Khatallah, a suspect in the 2012 Benghazi attack that resulted in the murder of four Americans:

"A New York Times reporter was able to connect with Ahmed Abu Khatallah in a hotel lobby in October 2012 just a month after the attacks in Benghazi. Since then, multiple journalists from a variety of publications have publically interviewed Khatallah.

"I'm thankful to our military, intelligence, and law enforcement officers for their service in capturing Khatallah in connection to the attacks on Americans serving their nation abroad. I am cautiously optimistic Khatallah's capture and the subsequent investigation will help us continue to piece together what happened that night and bring those who are responsible for the attack to justice.

"Despite a two-year delay in arresting Khatallah, the Administration must now take the appropriate steps to hold Khatallah and other co-conspirators responsible for their actions. The House will also continue our investigation into the events and failures of the attack that night through the Select Committee on Benghazi. Despite stonewalling by the Administration, House Republicans will continue to work to ensure the tragic events in Benghazi never again claim the lives of our soldiers and diplomats serving overseas."
