The Common Core is the first education initiative I have seen in my 34 years of teaching that is primarily focused on how we teach and learn, and then on what. We are a nation that is drifting educationally, and we need to bring forth problem solvers and collaborators; a solution that is offered by Common Core. The structure of the Common Core is to teach and learn habits of problem solving and collaboration, while also teaching and learning the curriculum at hand. We cannot know the challenges of the years ahead, so our students must be ready to take on any challenge that may arise. It takes innovation and new thinking by those charged with the education of our youth, and it is our job to clear the way with that progressive thinking that is required. Common Core is a unique education initiative that teaches students critical thinking and problem solving skills required for life outside of school. However, we must also consider the excessive testing and punitive teacher evaluations that Common Core encompasses.
