We know that the beauty of our state isn't just something we enjoy, but it is also one of the things that make our economy strong. Responsible and sustainable utilization of our natural resources should be a guiding principle for Maryland businesses and individuals. Everywhere I go, Marylanders tell me they want clean water to drink and clean air to breathe.
Those are basic rights that I have fought for throughout my career as a state legislator, and as chair of the Senate Environmental Subcommittee for over a decade. I have championed important environmental laws that protect the health and safety of all Marylanders, including:
The Maryland Recycling Act, which recycles 6 billion pounds of trash each year
A ban oil drilling in the Chesapeake Bay
The Brownfields Revitalization Act, which has led to the cleanup and redevelopment of thousands of acres of contaminated industrial sites
Strict requirements for more efficient automobile emissions standards resulting in reduced green house emissions and air pollution
Stiff penalties for polluting our water and stealing state natural resources
A ban on detergents that contain harmful chemicals and pollutants
As Attorney General, I will ensure those laws are enforced. I will move aggressively against individuals and businesses that release toxins into our air and waterways. I will work with local communities and seek out opportunities for regional cooperation to reduce air and water pollution. I will also support increased state funding for these activities. Every Marylander has the right to a clean and healthy environment.I have also been recognized for my work on preserving and protecting Maryland's environment and natural resources:
The 1989 Sierra Club's Conservationist of the Year
The 1999 Audubon Naturalist Society's Public Official of the Year
The 1991 Lawmaker of the Year -American Lung Association of Maryland
Member of the Chesapeake Bay Commission since 1995
Member of Joint Committee of Chesapeake Bay Critical Areas (1995-2003)
