Statement on Memorial Day and Our Veterans

Statement

Date: May 26, 2014
Location: Washington, DC

Rep. Jan Schakowsky released the following statement on Memorial Day:

"On Memorial Day, we remember and recognize the men and women who gave their lives in defense of our country. We celebrate the countless soldiers who answered the call of duty and fought around the world to protect our nation and our ideals. We remember those who died, those who are still overseas, and our veterans and military families.

In addition, we must pay special attention to the health of our veterans this Memorial Day. The recent issues at Veterans Affairs' hospitals are on the hearts and minds of our military families and all Americans. Our VA hospitals have improved in many areas -- even while many veterans from the Iraq and Afghanistan wars have been returning home.

However, it is absolutely unacceptable when any veteran is denied health care or has to endure lengthy wait times for care. We must resolve these issues as soon as possible and anyone found responsible for sub-standard care should be held fully accountable. Our veterans' commitment to our country is life long and we must always do our best to honor their service."

"I will always stand up for our members in the armed forces and their families. I will fight to provide our veterans with the benefits and services they have earned. This Memorial Day, please take time to thank a member of our military for their service. The United States is the greatest country in the world because of their sacrifice."
