Statement from Congressman Lungren on President Bush's State of the Union

(Washington, DC)-"Tonight, President Bush articulated his vision for the nation and outlined a forward-looking speech that set his legislative agenda for the 109th Congress and the future security of our nation.

"Tonight, President Bush firmly and boldly called upon the United States Congress to meet the challenges facing the long-term viability of Social Security. I implore the members of the Democratic minority in Congress to join President Bush in a bipartisan effort to maintain the durability of Social Security for future generations of Americans.

"I agree with President Bush that the Congress must work towards a comprehensive energy bill aimed at reducing our dependence on foreign oil, and the need for a workable guest worker program that addresses our border security needs and returns order and fairness to our immigration system.

"I join President Bush in saluting the Iraqi people for their bravery in risking their lives to cast a vote for freedom. Iraqis should be commended for taking an important first step toward a government accountable to the people.

"I also honor the courage and strength of the American men and women in our nation's military who fought the terrorists attempt to thwart the drive toward a free and democratic Iraq."
