Issue Position: Veterans

Issue Position

Long before I first got elected to the state legislature, I've always felt a duty as a Mainer to honor those who've sacrificed for our freedom as Americans, as well the brave men and women who continue to serve in our armed services today.

Maine has one of the highest per-capita populations of veterans in the country, and we owe it to them as a state and as a nation to fund services and programs they rely on, from college tuition and education assistance, to health care and providing for the families of those who make the ultimate sacrifice.

I've proudly served on the Veterans Affairs Committee in Congress, a position that has allowed me to influence legislation and increase funding for veterans programs at the state and national level. I led the effort to pass the largest investment in the history of the Department of Veterans' Affairs; helped pass a modern day GI Bill that provides full, four-year college scholarships for our returning warriors, and worked to increase funding for the treatment of PTSD and traumatic brain injuries. I've also worked hard to pass cost-of-living increases for disabled veterans and provide shelters for homeless veterans and their families.

I will continue to uphold my commitment to Maine's veterans as governor. Their service to this country can never be forgotten.
