Sinema Votes to Improve VA Accountability

Statement

Date: May 21, 2014
Location: Washington, DC

Today Congresswoman Kyrsten Sinema joined a bipartisan majority of her colleagues to pass legislation that improves accountability at the Phoenix VA Hospital. H.R. 4031, the "Department of Veterans Affairs Management Accountability Act of 2014", which Sinema co-sponsored, protects veterans by giving the Secretary of the Department of Veterans Affairs greater authority to hold underperforming senior executives accountable and to fire them for poor performance. Congresswoman Sinema released the following statement on the bill:

"Giving the Secretary of the VA the authority to fire bad managers is an important part of restoring accountability and our veterans' trust in the VA system. If these allegations are true, it is immoral, unconscionable, irresponsible and un-American. That this could be happening to the heroes who have defended our flag and our freedoms is completely unacceptable.

"Our bipartisan bill is part of the solution, and I will continue working so that individuals are held responsible and Arizona veterans have timely access to the high quality care they have earned."
