Congresswoman Frederica S. Wilson's Statement on the Passing of Dr. Maya Angelou

Statement

Congresswoman Frederica S. Wilson (FL-24) issued the following statement on the passing of legendary poet, author, educator and civil rights activist, Dr. Maya Angelou:

"Today, we mourn the loss of Dr. Maya Angelou, a literary giant and one of the most influential voices of our time.

"We mourn the loss of a pioneer and renowned civil rights activist who marched alongside Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. in the fight for justice and equality.

"We mourn the loss of a national treasure, a celebrated poet, author, educator, and a compassionate and "Phenomenal Woman" who inspired millions of people around the world.

"I had the honor of meeting Dr. Angelou on several occasions including the dedication ceremony at the Miami-Dade County elementary school I named in her honor in 1995 when I was a school board member. I remember how humble and gracious she was. In 2005, Dr. Angelou was a guest speaker, along with actor and humanitarian Harry Belafonte at the 5000 Role Models of Excellence Annual Martin Luther King Jr. Unity Scholarship Breakfast. As the founder of the Role Models, I will never get that day and her words of wisdom and inspiration.

"Dr. Angelou leaves a legacy of love of people, words and our country. She was a true humanitarian and will always be remembered," said Congresswoman Wilson.
