Issues: Education

An educator for over three decades, Marilyn has a unique understanding of the issues facing our schools and she has fought tirelessly both in and out of the classroom to create more opportunities for our kids. Marilyn knows firsthand that our kids are better off when parents, students, educators, and the entire community all have a stake in improving our schools.

Reducing class sizes is critical to learning. That's why Marilyn helped pass a measure that will put funding towards reducing class sizes in kindergarten for the first time in Nevada's history. As a former teacher, she knows that when classrooms are overcrowded, teachers can't give the individual attention to each student that they deserve--and that's why Marilyn fought for lower class sizes in the Assembly Education Committee in 2013.

She also knows that our students need the resources necessary to succeed, which is why she fought to get more dollars into the Southern Nevada classrooms -- where they belong. In the Assembly, Marilyn worked across the aisle to pass a measure that allocated $30 million per year to expand our State-funded full-day kindergarten to an additional 75 schools.

Marilyn also believes that our kids learn better when they are in a safe environment and we should do all we can to make sure they are protected in our schools. That's why as an Assemblywoman, Marilyn fought for and passed legislation that requires teachers to go through criminal background checks and fingerprint checks when they are relicensed -- not just when they are hired.
