Location: Washington, DC

Representative Annie Kuster (NH-02), today announced that Charlestown has received $1.3 million in AmeriCorps funding from the Corporation for National and Community Service (CNCS). This funding will be used by the Student Conservation Association, which has a regional branch in Charlestown, to send 1,631 AmeriCorps members to work on projects across the country. AmeriCorps members will tackle a variety of conservation initiatives, including the removal of invasive species, the establishment of native species, the restoration of trails, and the preservation of historic structures. Other Americorps members, including some post-911 veterans, will participate in hands-on conservation work and educational programs that promote and cultivate stewardship values and sustainable practices.

"AmeriCorps members are a critical resource for nonprofits, communities, and the individuals they serve," said Kuster. "Public engagement and service is an essential part of the solutions to many of our nation's environmental challenges, and AmeriCorps members strive to help by uniting individuals behind a common goal. I congratulate the Student Conservation Association for receiving these grants, and thank all those who have answered the call to service by joining AmeriCorps."

The 2014 AmeriCorps grant competition prioritized investments in economic opportunity, education, veterans and military families, and disaster services. AmeriCorps engages more than 75,000 members in intensive service annually to serve through nonprofit, faith-based, and community organizations at 25,000 locations across the country. These members help communities tackle pressing problems while mobilizing millions of volunteers for the organizations they serve.
