Congressman Jerry McNerney (CA-09) announced that the U.S. House of Representatives has approved an amendment he wrote that would improve job placement assistance for service members who are leaving the military and returning to civilian life.

Rep. McNerney's amendment to H.R. 4435, the National Defense Authorization Act, requires the Department of Defense to ensure civilian employment agencies work with state and county veterans offices, as well as National Guard offices, when helping service members find employment upon leaving the military.

"We owe it to the men and women who served our country to make sure they find good-paying jobs in today's economy and transition seamlessly from active duty to the civilian labor market," said Congressman McNerney. "Our veterans have skills and abilities that are valuable in the civilian workforce. Yet they often return home and find it challenging to find work. My amendment makes sure returning veterans can connect with valuable job resources and information from their local veterans' affairs and National Guard offices. Those offices have the best understanding of the unique needs of service members and veterans."

H.R. 4435 primarily authorizes defense spending and military programs. Rep. McNerney's amendment was approved unanimously by the House.
