Pittenger: Boko Haram Sanctions 'Important Step,' More Work To Do

Press Release

Date: May 28, 2014
Location: Charlotte, NC

Two weeks ago, Congressman Robert Pittenger (NC-09) led a bipartisan group of 172 Members of Congress in asking President Obama to urge the U.N. Security Council to impose sanctions against Boko Haram, the radical Islamist terror group responsible for kidnapping hundreds of Nigerian schoolgirls.

Yesterday, the United Nations Security Council took action, adding Boko Haram to a list of Al Qaeda linked groups subject to arms embargoes, travel bans, and the freezing of assets.

"Sanctions are an important step in building strong international pressure against Boko Haram, their sponsors, and anyone facilitating their heinous, cowardly acts," said Congressman Pittenger, Chairman of the Congressional Task Force on Terrorism. "Now, I encourage President Obama to unite world leaders in public outrage, ensuring the sanctions are fully enforced and pursuing additional options to restrict the activity of anyone connected to these criminals."

The original bipartisan letter, written by Congressman Pittenger, Congressman Steve Cohen (TN-09), Congressman Mike Honda (CA-17), and Congresswoman Barbara Lee (CA-03), was co-signed by 172 Members of Congress and mailed to President Obama on May 9th.
