Gov. Perry Launches Second Annual Texas Round-Up

Gov. Rick Perry today launched the second annual Texas Round-Up health and fitness program. The governor's statewide initiative is designed to encourage all Texans to incorporate daily physical activity and healthy choices into their lives.

"Today we are here to kick off the second annual Texas Round-Up, and to ask every Texan to join the movement that has already helped thousands of adults and children incorporate daily exercise in their life," Perry said.

Perry noted that a lack of fitness costs Texas taxpayers and businesses $10 billion each year due to increased use of the health care system and lost productivity in the workplace.

"The Texas Round-Up is much more than a one day fitness festival," Perry said. "It is an opportunity for Texans to make a new beginning and a lasting commitment to better health and a better quality of life."

The Texas Round-Up program includes:

* An interactive exercise log that helps Texans set clear, realistic goals by providing online daily fitness plans for all levels of experience online at (www.texasroundup.org).
* A scheduled 10K run/walk and fitness festival event on April 30. The festival is designed for the whole family and will include a children's race, obstacle course, live music and special guests.
* A Governor's challenge designed to encourage all Texas communities to participate. The competition is based on participation in the online program as well as the April 10K. The city and/or region with the highest participation rate will be awarded the Governor's Cup.

Last year more than 5,500 Texans participated in the Texas Round-Up fitness festival and 10K challenge. Over 22,000 Texans signed up for the personalized daily training program, and more than 520 cities competed for the title of fittest city in Texas.
