SPECTER COMMENTS ON THE PRESIDENT'S STATE OF THE UNION ADDRESS
Washington, D.C. - U.S. Senator Arlen Specter, Chairman of the Senate Judiciary Committee, made the following comments following President Bush's State of the Union address:
"I was pleased to hear the President's emphasis on education with increasing Pell grants, and his proposals for health savings accounts. His ideas on Social Security certainly deserve a full national hearing. It is a complicated subject, but we need to consider what the President has in mind and in some detail.
"I believe Congress will grant his request for $350 million for the Palestinian Authority to promote peace in the Mid-East. He was right on target to demand more from the Saudis in terms of helping in the Mid-East peace process, to call on Egypt to do more as they have upcoming elections and to demand that Syria oust the terrorists from Damascus.
"Overall it was a confident speech and I think a very good one."
