Governor Tom Corbett today visited Somerset Hospital to celebrate its efforts to address women's health and emergency services in the area, made possible through a $3 million Economic Growth Initiative grant announced earlier this year.
"This is a prime example of government and local communities working together to address the needs of the people," Corbett said. "Somerset Hospital identified the increasing need to address women's health and emergency services in the area and the commonwealth responded with the resources to make the hospital's vision to reach this population a reality."
"This announcement is great news for people of Somerset County. In rural areas, we have seen a decline in access to important women's health services. Somerset Hospital is now poised to provide the care so desperately needed to the women and children of Somerset," Corbett added.
The Economic Growth Initiative grant is supporting the renovation of both the women's health and emergency facilities of the hospital. Included is a newly renovated women's health and obstetrics unit, which will include a level II, neonatal intensive care nursery (ICN). The ICN will provide care to infants born with illness or prematurity. Renovations to the emergency department will add another 2,000 square feet of space, creating a facility for women and children in need of emergency care following assault or abuse. The facility will incorporate state of the art technology, including potential telemedicine capabilities that enable expert consultation during complex or emergency situations and will enhance the delivery of care to patients.
"We are delighted to have Governor Corbett with us today," said Craig Saylor, CEO of Somerset. "His administration's efforts to address the needs of Pennsylvanians' access to quality healthcare are working. With the state's assistance, Somerset Hospital can invest in two critical service lines, obstetrics and emergency medicine, both of which are important community assets."
As part of his visit, Corbett toured recently renovated areas of the hospital that serve as the template for further enhancements.
The renovation plan for Somerset's women's health and emergency medicine departments will create a state of the art environment, which assists Somerset Hospital in ongoing efforts to recruit physician and clinical talent to the area. Somerset Hospital is the largest employer in the Borough of Somerset, and a regional economic engine, employing over 850 full time equivalent positions.
The Economic Growth Initiative is an administration-sponsored economic development program that provides local communities with grants for the acquisition and construction of economic, cultural, civic, and historical improvement projects.
