U.S. Senator Booker to Discuss New Transportation Funding at Port of New York and New Jersey

Press Release

Date: May 1, 2014
Issues: Transportation

U.S. Sen. Cory Booker (D-NJ) will tour the Maher Terminals tomorrow at the Elizabeth-Port Authority Marine Terminal with Maher CEO Gary Cross, followed by a roundtable discussion on the economic impact of ports and the upcoming reauthorization of MAP-21 surface transportation legislation. (The Elizabeth-Port Authority Marine Terminal, along with Port Newark, the Howland Hook Marine Terminal, the Brooklyn-Port Authority Marine Terminal, the Red Hook Container Terminal, and the Port Jersey Port Authority Marine Terminal comprise the Port of New York and New Jersey -- the largest port on the East Coast.)

The Senate's Environment and Public Works Committee (EPW) has begun hearings on MAP-21 reauthorization, which governs federal surface transportation spending, and on Tuesday, the Obama Administration released its $302 billion transportation proposal.

Next week, EPW Chair Barbara Boxer (D-Calif.) and Ranking Member David Vitter (R-La.) are scheduled to release their transportation plan, and the Senate Commerce Committee will hold its first hearing on reauthorization. (The Senate Banking and Finance Committees will also be involved in the consideration and passage of MAP-21.) Booker sits on both Commerce and EPW and is talking to stakeholders in advance of MAP-21's reauthorization. The senator will work to ensure that the package prioritizes infrastructure spending that will help the U.S. strengthen its economic competitiveness and that it delivers transportation funding and jobs for New Jersey -- from freight rail to logistics and from package delivery to port projects.
