Congressman Xavier Becerra on Speaker Boehner's Surprise Select Committee Announcement

Statement

Today, Congressman Xavier Becerra (CA-34), Chairman of the House Democratic Caucus, released the following statement in response to Speaker John Boehner's surprise announcement that he will appoint a select committee to investigate the 2012 terrorist attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi, Libya:

"It gets harder and harder to know which Speaker Boehner you're dealing with when he keeps changing his positions. It's like the strange case of Dr. Jekyll and Mr. Hyde.

"Less than one month ago, Speaker Boehner said "there are four committees that are investigating Benghazi' and that he saw 'no reason to break up all the work that's been done and to take months and months and months to create some select committee.' But today, without consulting House Democrats, Speaker Boehner made yet another reversal from his previously stated position and announced that he will appoint a select committee to investigate the 2012 terrorist attack on the U.S. Consulate in Benghazi.

"Conveniently enough, the announcement was made just hours after a better-than-expected jobs report showing 288,000 new jobs in April, one day after it was confirmed that over 8 million Americans signed up for private health insurance thanks to the Affordable Care Act, and one week after Speaker Boehner openly mocked his Republican colleagues who oppose fixing our broken immigration system. Either the Speaker is suffering from a bad case of the Flip-Flops or he is using a tragic but thoroughly-investigated incident in Benghazi as a political stunt to detract from the good news on the progress of our economy and the well-being of the American people. Whichever is true, it's difficult to trust where House Republicans will take us next."
